Championship open-wheel development team Abel Motorsports made their big off-season move pay off in grand style at the season-opening Grand Prix of St.Petersburg, FL., earning a sweep of the two Indy Pro 2000 presented by Cooper Tires events that kicked off the 2019 season.

Young ace Parker Thompson of Red Deer, Alberta, Canada, who recently joinedAbel Motorsports for the final preseason test and the year’s first two rounds, had a nearly flawless visit to the St. Pete temporary circuit.   Thompson qualified on pole for both events and led virtually flag to flag.   “Abel Motorsports is a fantastic team,” commented the double winner.  “They showed how strong they are last year, winning the F3Americas championship.  And they’ve given me a great race car.   I’m glad we could score the first two wins of the year.  It’s about time I won at St. Pete!”

Abel Motorsports’ lead driver, Jacob Abel, celebrated his 18th birthday on Saturday at St. Pete with a solid 11th place finish, after running 9th in the season opener on Friday.   “We came here with a list of goals, and we reached them all.   We ran all the laps and got faster each session.“

“This was my first time on a street course so this was definitely a learning experience for me and I feel like we learned a lot.   Parker is a fantastic teammate and coach and we worked together really well.  I can’t wait to get back on track at Indy later this spring.”

For team principal Bill Abel, this first fulltime season on the Road to Indy couldn’t have gotten off to a better start.   “The Road to Indy is a fantastic platform for our team.    Everyone at Abel Motorsports did an outstanding job to prepare for the new season and I’m thrilled.   This couldn’t have gone better.”

The Indy Pro 2000 presented by Cooper Tires series takes a two-month break before the second doubleheader race weekend of the season in the month of May at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course on Indy Grand Prix weekend.
